HOU Jianguo, Professor and Ph.D. in Chemical Physics, is President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Executive President of the Presidium of Academic Divisions of CAS (i.e., CAS Members Learned Society). He is also a member of the 20th CPC Central Committee and a member of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress.
As a distinguished physical chemist and nanomaterials scientist, his professional pursuits have significantly contributed to research on the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials and nanostructures, the physical and chemical properties of single molecules and their assemblies, and scanning tunnel microscopy. He was elected a member of CAS in 2003 and became a fellow of the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS) the following year. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK.
In 1995, Professor HOU assumed the position of professor at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). He was subsequently appointed Vice President of USTC in 2000, Executive Vice President in 2005, and President in 2008.
In 2015, Professor HOU was appointed Vice Minister of Science and Technology. The following year, he was appointed Deputy Party Chief of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In 2017, he was appointed Deputy Director of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine (ministerial level). In 2018, he was appointed Vice President of CAS (ministerial level). In December 2020, he was appointed President of CAS.
